We were joined last night by some Germans in a Bimobil but they were very quiet so it was no hassle.
We had another golden eagle sighting before setting off and saw a great northern diver out on the sea too. Altogether it was a cracking camp. Oh, I've previously forgot to mention occasional sightings of wheatear and eider duck too.
I'd spotted an interesting looking road on the map that ran alongside the very long Loch Awe so we gave it a go. Lock Awe did what it said on the tin. It's a very pretty place and had a few snow-capped peaks along the way as an impressive backdrop.
We stopped for lunch along its banks (pic) and Emma found some frogspawn in a ditch at the side of a forest track.
The road was pretty dodgy in places - at times the outer quarter of each of our tyres was hanging off the side of the tarmac and the verges were very soft and sinky. It took massive concentration to keep it on the island.
We also met a couple of bigger vehicles head on including one farmer with a very big livestock trailer. Some challenging reversing was required and at one point the verge grabbed our nearside wheels and slewed us off the tarmac.
The afternoon and early evening was awful. We basically made a bad decision to visit the Roseneath peninsula hoping to find a camp and if that failed get a ferry to Greenock and return to the area we'd camped on the way up at the start of the trip.
Both plans failed. There was nowhere nice to camp and the ferry was for foot passengers only. This meant a long drive off the peninsula and the need to get over Glasgow at rush hour. It got even worse with the sat nav deciding to take us off the M8 and right through the centre and, for extra entertainment, we hit hailstorms of biblical proportions.
I already intensely disliked Glasgow but suffice to say that tempers frayed and I vow never to visit the god-forsaken hole again. Even as we managed to rejoin the M8, it immediately ground to a halt with a crash further up the road. It was obvious we were stuffed on the motorway so I bailed and just headed to the hills. By the time we found somewhere to kip (coordinates) it was quite literally almost dark.
A really, really fatiguing drive and apart from where we woke up and Loch Awe, a shitty day.
