At the Solway Firth, the best place for migrating geese I know.
It's cold and a bit murky but still surrounded by zillions of barnacle and pink-footed geese, as well as loads of other stuff including shelduck, herring and lesser black-backed gulls.
Also had a brilliant sighting of a barn owl quartering about for at least 20 minutes right close to the truck. Maybe had a Merlin too out on the salt marsh but it was just a bit too far away for a 100% sighting.
Hardly anyone lives in this most northwestern part of England and it's so much the better for it. Even authentic 1950s (maybe earlier) road signs exist in mint condition. Black and white poles with cast iron embossed place names and distances. You can just picture the Famous Five stopping on their bicycles to check out directions.
Ahhh, those were the days: a gentler, more benign time: imperialism, overt sexism and racism...
