It's been a full-on drive but we've just made it to the coordinates shown, which might just be the most remote bit of road in England: the head of the Coquet valley.
It's an important area for archaeology and there are many vestiges of Roman forts and settlements. The main attraction for us, though, is that it's bleak, remote and beautiful. Incredibly, all up the Coquet valley there remains a smattering of farmsteads. About half are abandoned but some people are still living here. Fair to say they're a long way from anything...
In these harsh and (to us) barren surroundings we still saw dipper (my first in about a decade), goosander, buzzard, raven, twite, and also had a brilliant fox-in-the-snow sighting. Good for us, but an indicator that times are tough if hunting by day is necessary just to stay alive.
Lunch in the truck with the heater belting out toasty-warm air seems like cheating up here...
