Bummed out big time today after making the effort to get to the Imperial War Museum. Before we'd set off from home I'd double checked it was open over the holidays and found it's open 362 days a year. It should have been open today but high winds yesterday damaged one of the buildings and meant the whole thing had to close for emergency repairs. This thing has eluded me for about 20 years now.
Consoled ourselves by heading to Stibbington Diner for a proper trucker's giant veggie breakfast. Two massive plates full, proper pot of tea and a proper trucker visit to the gents - all for under a tenner. Awesome.
From there we went to a place I half noticed when out exploring a few years ago. A US Air Force WW2 base from which they flew Flying Fortresses - B17s - on bombing raids over Europe. A memorial has been set up but it's right in the middle of nowhere - really desolate and at first glance neglected and forgotten. In a little weatherproof box by the memorial though is a visitors' book and looking at that shows that the place is incredibly well visited. Many international visitors, the vast majority from the USA have paid homage, all to a stark and anonymous corner of a field in the arse end of nowhere. Humbling stuff.
Made our way from there to Yew Tree Avenue in Rutland. Camped here before a couple of times and hoping it's far enough from any centres of population that we aren't treated to other people's infatuation with making loads of noise in the middle of the night.
