Camargue Trip - Day 7 - France

Things to remember:
  • Had a pleasant if chilly wander about first thing and saw more yellow-legged gulls, cirl buntings and a few linnets, too.
  • The last drive south became more and more Mediterranean in feel until I hit the Camargue proper, which is like an entirely different country.
  • It really is. The topography, climate, vegetation and architecture are all strikingly different from the immediately surrounding bits of France.
  • Headed straight for a formal nature reserve valled Les Marais du Vigueirat, where - upon stepping out of the camper - immediately realised why covered parking is provided. It was swelteringly hot.
  • Swallows, butterflies, lizards and dragonflies were incredibly abundant, even in the car park.
  • The reserve itself was fantastic and a bargain at €6. A list of more unusual things spotted: lesser-spotted woodpecker, firecrest, cattle egret, European pond turtle, flamingoes and a western green lizard. The latter was probably around 25cm long and a first for me.
  • Encountered a good example of French children not throwing food on the reserve.
  • At the location shown now, overlooking the larger of the Rhône delta's arms (pic) and coming down from my over-stimulation to the thrum of big barges.
