Thetford Forest was a different place this morning with plenty of birdsong and some pleasant sunshine (pic).
The morning's drive took us through the network of navigable channels known as The Middle Levels. Since my boating days these have held a fascination for me. From memory you can get to some totally isolated spots and can come across some very odd-sized locks; 40 foot rings a bell. I could see me hiring a boat and having a potter about here at some point.
Stibbington Diner followed, naturally.
From there we headed to Clipsham Forest area but rather than settle for our standard Yew Tree Walk spot we had a drive around some of the tiny lanes in this quiet corner of Rutland and have instead ended up at the coordinates shown. We're roadside, but it's a to-and-from nowhere road and from here we have access to some nice walks round some Wildlife Trust meadows and woodlands.
Birds sightings included treecreeper, great-spotted woodpecker and good numbers of yellowhammers. An unexpected sighting took the form of a red kite. It's particularly good for hares here and as night starts to fall it seems tawnys are around in force, too.
