The sky at last night's camp was incredible. It was clear, sharp, and we were miles from any artificial lights so - for as long as we could stand the bitter cold - we marvelled at it. All the major constellations were clearly visible with the naked eye, as was the Milky Way. Awesome.
This morning saw us pottering down to the NNR at Gibraltar Point before meandering round the tiny lanes to the west of The Wash with a few random stop-offs to check out the birds and walk the whippet.
In spite of the massively agricultural land use round here we saw tons of passerine flocks as well as the more expected gulls, geese and waders. Our longest stop was just to the north of Freiston Shore RSPB reserve where scoping out over the saltmarsh brought sightings of two male hen harriers.
Brent geese are all over the place down here and - keeping up the goose theme - there was also a flock of about 200 pink-footed at Gibraltar. The other stand-out sighting was a lone avocet, again at Gibraltar.
At the coordinates shown now where it's just us, hundreds of eastern European field-labourers and thousands of wheeling knot.
