Made it to Kent by late morning and we've already 'done' a couple of natural history attractions. First was Challock Forest. It's in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is made up mostly of coppiced sweet chestnuts that are harvested mainly for hop poles i.e. poles to grow hops up: a forest managed mainly for beer! It makes for quite an odd landscape (pic).
Second, we went to an area of downland called the Devil's Kneading Trough. This is a huge steep-sided chalk valley that's very pretty and is renowned for its flowers and butterflies in the warmer months. It's supposed to boast the best view in Kent too. It was indeed pretty, if you could get past Dungeness power station and Romney wind farm...
A bonus was a twee restaurant tucked away nearby that did cracking cream teas at very reasonableness prices. I don't know what it is about scones, jam, cream and tea that is so awesome, but awesome it unquestionably is.
We're now hunkered with bellies full of fat and sugar at the location shown at the end of a dead-end road near a gliding club. As long as no one from the club takes offence it should do very nicely.
