After leaving Alsace a drive through some of Emma's 'boring French bits' had to be done to cover some ground. After failing to find an overnighting spot at the first effort I plugged on through the southern extremities of Belgium and back into France before I chanced upon the Montmédy Citadel.
What a bizarre place. It's a citadel atop a hill guarded by walls of mediaeval proportions. The odd thing is that within the fully enclosed walls there is a fairly large community of perfectly ordinary French people still living. Some of their houses are immaculate and some are tumbledown. There are also many extant buildings related to the citadel, some of which are preserved as a 'living museum' and some, again, are in ruin.
It's a very strange set up. The community's only access is via the original draw bridge and portcullis and its really odd to see children playing and people just doing really normal things in what in effect is a mediaeval courtyard.
It's a genuinely odd place and once again is testament to how bumbling aimlessly in motorhomes makes stuff happen.
