After a steady breakfast watching the geese we met the local farmer who pulled over in his tractor and spent a few minutes chatting about the splendour of the area. It was humbling to hear that though he spends much of his working time in the area all he really wants to do is watch the migration routines on the Solway.
Stuart surpassed himself by sinking in a bog within two minutes of starting his morning walk necessitating a thorough clean-up operation. Post whippet clean we headed off to Caerlaverock castle via a couple of takee-photo-back-on-bus stop offs and acted like grown ups admiring the architecture and culture before then trying to find a good overnighting spot.
So far it's been tough here, every decent place has 'No Overnight Parking' notices. This is something we didn't anticipate, imagining this to be a relatively un-touristed area and not subject to such heavy restriction.
Currently at Mershead RSPB reserve and have found a (hopefully) none confrontational bit of track to park on. Reserve is good, loads more geese and wildfowl as well as some north/west/upland specialists such as wheatear.
Saw first bat of the year too as darkness fell, hunting round the front of the truck.
